How Healthy is a Vegan Diet in Pregnancy?

It is said that since the vegan diet does not include meat, fish, things obtained from animals like milk, dairy products, ghee etc. In such a situation, vegan diet is not a better option for a pregnant woman. Due to this, the body does not get many essential nutrients. Pregnancy is a phase in which you need a lot of calcium, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, B12 etc.

If a pregnant woman does not take all these nutrients continuously, then the baby will not weigh as much during birth as it should. It will not develop properly. Calcium and iron supplements should be taken from the third month of pregnancy. If you are not consuming milk or other dairy products at all, then it can be quite challenging.

It is okay to follow a vegan diet in a normal routine life, but since it does not include many essential things, foods, it is not right to adopt a vegan diet during pregnancy. The need for calcium, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B, B12 is high in pregnancy, which may require supplementation in the baseline diet, as all these nutrients are included in the vegan diet is lacking.

What if someone is a vegetarian?

If someone follows a vegan diet or is completely vegetarian, then they will have to consume more legumes, pulses. Things made from pulses will have to be consumed in large quantities. Eat sprouts, as they are grains. Nuts like almonds, pistachios, seeds like sunflower seeds, melon seeds, watermelon seeds, green leafy vegetables, fruits will have to be consumed more, as they are high in iron, calcium.

Since milk, yogurt or other dairy products are not included in the vegan diet, supplements are needed to meet the needs of vitamin D and B12. You can take soybean for protein, calcium. To meet the deficiency of nutrients obtained from milk, curd, cheese in the vegan diet, you have to rely on supplements.
