T20 World Cup 2021: R Ashwin, who has returned to India’s white-ball set-up after nearly a 4-year gap, posted with the brand new T20 World Cup jersey. Ashwin was a surprise pick in India’s 15-man squad for the showpiece event in the UAE.

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shared a heartwarming post on social media, flaunting his T20 World Cup jersey. Ashwin revealed a message from one of his daughters who was sharing the frame with the seasoned off-spinner in the photograph.
R Ashwin returned to the limited-overs set-up after being on the sidelines for close to 4 years. The off-spinner last played a T20I for India in July 2017 in the West Indies.
However, Ashwin earned a surprise recall as he was picked as one of the five spinners before Axar Patel was replaced by Shardul Thakur. Ashwin’s selection came after India’s preferred off-spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar was ruled out with an injury ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Sporting the new India blue jersey, R Ashwin revealed his daughter told him that she had never seen in him in the India blue before Sunday. It was an emotional moment for Ashwin as the off-spinner shared a photo of himself with the blue jersey and his daughter in the background.
“When your daughter says ‘I have never seen you in this jersey appa’ can’t leave her out of the picture. Can you ? @prithinarayanan”. Ashwin’s wife Prithi Narayanan also responded to the post with emojis.
Ashwin has been a fine performer for Delhi Capitals and Tamil Nadu in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament over the years despite not playing the white-ball format at the international level. Ashwin had a decent outing with Delhi Capitals in the second leg of IPL 2021 in the UAE.
Why R Ashwin for the T20 World Cup
Skipper Virat Kohli, speaking to the press ahead of the T20 World Cup, explained R Ashwin’s selection in the team, saying the off-spinner was rewarded for improving his white-ball skills in the recent past.
“The one thing Ashwin has really improved and he is bowling with a lot of courage. He is not shy to put the ball in the right areas against batsmen like Polly (Pollard), lengths at which the bowlers can be hit. Ashwin has been rewarded for reviving his white-ball bowling,” he said.
“Ash and Jadeja have been performing really well which augurs really well for us as a team to see these finger spinners back.”
Ashwin has played 46 T20Is for India and has picked up 52 wickets at an impressive economy rate of less than 7 runs per over.
