- Sehwag said Dhoni should play one more season before retiring
Former India opener Virender Sehwag said MS Dhoni still has a lot to offer as captain for Chennai Super Kings and that he would want to see the winning captain play for the franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as well.
Virender Sehwag said MS Dhoni’s legacy as India captain is hard to match and same is the case with his captaincy at Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni led CSK to their 4th IPL title on Friday as the side defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in what turned out to be a one-sided final in Dubai.
Dhoni remained coy about his future as a player with Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2022. While he insisted that he has still not “left behind” anything at CSK, the influential captain said a lot will depend on the retention and auction rules of IPL 2021, considering the two new teams that will be added to the league next year.
“It’s a phenomenal team. No one in Team India could beat Dhoni’s legacy and hopefully, it would be difficult for any other captain to do the same for CSK. I feel he has one more year left in him for Chennai. He must play next season and then retire,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
Sehwag went on to say that Rohit Sharma, who has won 5 titles as captain with MS Dhoni, will need time to recreate Dhoni’s legacy at CSK with the Mumbai franchise.
“The legacy of the captain is known for the number of trophies he has won. And this captain [MS Dhoni] has won four titles and played 9 finals. So, to match him up will be an uphill task for any other skipper. Rohit Sharma is indeed close but to play 9 season finals, he needs more time,” he added.
Meanwhile, a CSK official on Sunday told India Today that MS Dhoni will be the first player that the franchise will retain for IPL 2022 if the BCCI allows the teams to retain players.
“MS will be the first man to be retained, there is no doubt about it. But first of all we need to know the retention rules, which we are not aware of as of now. If we can retain (players), Dhoni will be first to save,” a CSK source told Sports Tak.
“Which team or franchise would not want to retain a man like Dhoni. Two new teams will be added, so it would be great to see the competition. There are many things which we will have to see but as of now I can only say that we will go for Dhoni. The rest we will see and go by rules set by the BCCI,” said the source.
